Artifact 1: Water Project
Description: The Water Project is an ongoing social project in which students can help to donate clean water to children in need. In my classroom, students enter the room, pull out their cell phones, bring up the website tap.unicef.usa and set their phones on my desk. When a student's’ phone is left on this website throughout the class, for every five minutes the phone is untouched, UNICEF will donate one day of clean drinking water to a child in need. I keep data on how many days students are able to donate (both in and outside of class) and turn it into a weekly competition. Students are motivated by this, as it is an easy way to help those in need, and, as an added bonus, the winning class earns a class period outside.
Rationale: I believe this artifact qualifies under standard 11 because it is an innovative way to incorporate each student’s technological devices. Above is a set of data from the first week of starting this project. In one week students we able to raise over five years of water to a child in need. Students think it is crazy that they can do something good for someone else on the other side of the world without actually doing anything. While the students are not actively using technology in this case, it raises awareness of what technology can do in a globalized world. Overall, it has been a positive experience for all students and the learning environment.

Artifact 2: Google Classroom
Description: Google Classroom is an online tool that aids in distributing word-document assignments, and keeping a class schedule for all of the semester’s work (due dates, upcoming assignments, etc.).
Rationale: This artifact relates to standard 11 because it shows one of several ways we use technology each day in class. Google classroom has been a great way for students to connect to class, even when out of the physical classroom. In this class, I found that one of the best features of this program was being able to keep students up to date with materials and assignments from classes they missed due to absences. My students were all previously familiar with Google Classroom, as many other teachers at Noble High School use this tool, as well.
