Artifact 1: Cuban Refugee Lesson
Description: The Cuban Refugee lesson was the first lesson I taught solo during my student-teaching experience. This lesson covers the history of the Cuban Revolution as well as the migration of refugees to Florida at this time.
Rationale: I believe that this artifact shows an innovative approach to the application of content because of the use of primary source documents. Students enjoyed reading and annotating these primary source documents because it gave them a new perspective into a different time period. The assessment for this lesson had the students take the role of someone who worked at a Cuban Refugee Assistance Program which allowed the students to make deeper connections to the content.

Artifact 2: Civil Rights Unit
Description: The Civil Rights Unit consists of five lessons. This unit encourages students to imagine what life was like in the Jim Crow South, to understand why so many people were willing to risk their lives to change it, and to explore how they went about doing so. The image above is a screenshot of all pieces that were needed in making this unit happen (slideshows, lesson plans, documents. etc.)
Rationale: I believe this unit, as a whole, connects well with this standard because there are various examples of the content being applied in innovative ways. The entire unit is based on the film, A Time for Justice. The lessons apply themes such as nonviolence, facing resistance, and victories and connect them to specific events from the film. Throughout these lessons, students are exposed to videos, primary source documents, secondary source documents, small and whole group activities, individual tasks, and a civil conversation in which civil-rights themes are compared to current events.
